1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
In 1996 at a spring training game between the Pittsburgh Pirates & Minnesota Twins in Bradenton Florida I caught a foul ball hit by utility infielder Jeff Reboulet. To this day, that is the highlight of my life.

2. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
Well organized, good snacks, and friendly people.

3. What is your best race advice?
Be patient early, smart in the middle, and tough at the end.

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
I love the community-building ethos of this organization, the well-organized events and the beautiful courses that are featured in RUNVAN® race.

2. What is your best race advice?
Know your pace and stick with it! Often with race adrenaline, people cheering, etc. it’s easy to start at a pace faster than the one you trained with which is not wise as you will pay for it later! It’s better to have a bit of energy left at the end to do a negative split and even sprint a bit towards the end than to slow down mid race because of a too aggressive start.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I’m deathly afraid of sharks. But I still swim in the ocean.

2. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
I really like how local and inclusive the RUNVAN® events are. Every RUNVAN® race I enter, I’m guaranteed to see so many friends and the competition is always fierce.

3. What is your best race advice?
Don’t over think it, stay focused, stay positive.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
The 2009 Fall Classic Half Marathon was my first time at that distance – then I ran my first full Marathon in May of 2010.

2. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
Fantastic people, amazing support, stellar events!

3. What is your favourite post-run food?
My wife’s homemade chocolate chip cookies!

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I love creating furniture and art from plywood and cardboard using laser cutter.

2. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
The medals RUNVAN® make for their events are spectacular; they have a nice solid weight, and spectacular designs. T-shirts from the BMO Vancouver Marathon are also grea. As proven by me, they can withstand dozens of washes, and tend to impress fellow runners.

3. We all have it. What is the worst, repetitive song in your head while running?
“Eye of the Tiger”, of course! You pass by the invited band, they happen to play it – boom! You’re stuck with the motive for the rest of the run.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I think assembling IKEA furniture is one of the greatest joys of life.

2. What is your best race advice?
Hopefully you’ve done the training leading up to the race because race week is the time to be tapering and resting up. My race advice is to pace yourself responsibly and not go out too quick. Remember that no matter the weather or conditions, we choose to be out there on the course and people choose to be out there cheering us on, so have the best experience you can.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I have a brother named Jishan, and my parents still mix us up.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
French fries and ice cream. In the same sitting.

3. What is your best race advice?
Have fun with it! Smile, thank your volunteers and your support crew, and take in all the race vibes. And always plan a post race meal! It gives you something to look forward to when you’re hammering away the miles on race day!

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
Although I have lived in Vancouver my whole life and ran almost everywhere in the city, I never get bored. Vancouver is such a beautiful place to run. The scenic routes RUNVAN® offers along with the amazing event organization from the RUNVAN® team always leave me with an unforgettable experience.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
A big smoothie with as many berries as I can fit in!

3. What is your best race advice?
Warm up properly! Getting your body ready and not letting the adrenaline take over your initial few kilometres will help you keep on pace towards achieving your goal! Ensure to save some energy for a strong finishing kick to end the race with a bang!

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I didn’t start running until age 36. I went from a 36 min 5KM to a 20 min 5KM that first year. And that’s why you should never be afraid to try new things. You just never know when it might turn into your next passion.

2. What is your best race advice?
Your body will do what your mind believes it’s capable of. Your mental training is as important as your physical training. Everyone has that moment in a race when they question why they’re doing this. Prepare the answer before the race so you can focus on it when the time comes. Practice it during the hard workouts. One more good piece of advice comes from a previous coach: Your legs always follow your arms. If you can’t move your legs faster, focus on the arms.

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
I moved here from Edmonton three years ago, and I love that I can run outside year-round. RUNVAN® events are always tons of fun, and in my family we have three generations running them.

2. We all have it. What is the worst, repetitive song in your head while running?
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins

3. What is your best race advice?
Race day adrenaline is going to help you run faster than you think you can! Have fun and enjoy the awesome atmosphere.

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
RUNVAN® has my favourite races. The BMO Vancouver Marathon was my first Half. I love the Granville Island Turkey Trot – even though as Mexicans we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, I realized that there are so many things to be grateful and for me this is the best way to celebrate, and I love to see everyone’s costumes. I am sure that I will fall in love with the Fall Classic – all the nostalgia and the colours of autumn make me happy.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
I love a protein shake with orange, apple or carrot juice. Super refreshing and I can get back my energy super fast. Probably an hour later I can eat an apple crostata, and a cup of coffee.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself
I haven’t used it in 25 years, but I still keep a hackie sack in my backpack. It’s become a good luck charm.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
I’m a sucker for juicy burger with a cold beverage to wash it down.

3. What is your best race advice?
Don’t forget to warm up before the start gun. Five to 10 minutes of your easy running pace and a couple strides are plenty.

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
I love the running community – I like how it brings people together! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. And most importantly, the food!

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
Lots and lots of carbs please. PIZZA!

3. What is your best race advice?
It’s only X mins of running, and then it’s sushi, pizza time!

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I started a Strava run club this summer called the Ice Cream and Donut Run Club. We meet at a different ice cream or donut shop, go for a run, and then sample their treats. We have over 100 club members and regularly have 15-25 people run with us.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
I love going for brunch post run with all my friends to talk about our race. If there’s hashbrowns or French fries involved, I’m there!

3. What is your best race advice?
Smile when you see the photographers. Smiling while you run puts you in a good mood and it’s easier to run with a positive attitude than with a scowl. Besides, the kilometres will seem to fly by when you’re having fun!

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
The openness and inclusiveness of the running community. RUNVAN® makes an event out of each race. Instead of just showing up for the race, RUNVAN® focuses on the event with race expos at package pick-up and activities after the race. There is something for everyone, from volunteering to participating in the events.

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
Krinkle cut sea salt potato chips, bone broth, and pepperoni to satisfy the salt, fat, and protein which my body wants after a long distance run event.

3. What is your best race advice?
It’s about the finish line, not just the finish time. Have fun and run happy.

1. Why do you like to RUNVAN®?
I love the energy and vibe in all the RUNVAN® events I have ran in. I’ve met a lot of people through running!

2. What is your favourite post-run food?
PIZZA!

3. What is your best race advice?
Enjoy the run. I know the focus for many will be hitting that team goal but being part of a fun race and meeting new people helps! Definitely SMILE – it helps.
